Preparing For The California Contractor License Exam

By Jimmy Callahan

In preparing for this important examination it should be understood that the test has two components. The first part of the California Contractor License Exam requires all eligible individuals to pass the Law and Business examination. The second test that must be passed covers the specific certification area or trade for which the individual is applying. There are a number of ways to prepare for the tests that will depend on how much time you have and resources available to you.

The section pertaining to Law and Business will consist of multiple choice questions. Business management and construction law are covered in this section of the test. The study guide that is sent with the notice to appear for testing can be used for studying. A breakdown of the topics covered on the examination are included in the guide. Qualifying applicants can also use the materials suggested in the guide to prepare for the test.

Additionally, a guide is provided for the second part of the examination. The guide for certification, like the guide for the first part, offers a list of topics covered on the test. In addition, information on resources for preparing is also included in the guide. As with the first section of the test, this part has only multiple choice questions.

How you study for the examination will be dictated by how much time you have to devote. You can study from home, find a school that can prepare applicants, take classes at your local college, or choose to use online preparation programs. There are many folks who prepare on their own with success. Even if you choose to take a prep course, the state contractors licensing agency can provide free study resources.

Those who decide to study from home should be sure to get all the materials for study from local and state licensing agencies. The resources that are offered consist of reference materials that can be taken in to the examination. Individuals are also able to bring the Contractors Guide to Business Law and Project Management with them into the examination.

Those who choose the prep school receive classroom instruction and tutoring for both the general and specialized examinations. Reference books can be purchased from these schools. The prep schools will also assist with locating secured bonds, filing, and risk insurance. A reputable school will guide the student through the complete testing process offering support even after passing the test.

Some people believe that a prep school is not worth spending the money or time, while others disagree. The state licensing agency can provide a list of prep schools for folks who are interested. Additionally, the licensing agency can provide a list of the bookstores that carry the materials needed for studying.

At the testing site, provided you pass the test, you will receive a form regarding bond and fee notification. The form has information about requirements needed to be submitted for your license. All applicants must be accepted and approved to receive their license even if they passed the examination.
