Stain Removal: How To Preserve Your Carpeting

By Suzanne Herrman

If you have carpet, chances are that sometimes food, drink or other substances get spilled on these fibers. Some stains are simple to remove, but others can be quite difficult to remove. It is important to understand the following facts before you start to remove a particularly difficult stain.

With the vast majority of stains, speed is the most important factor in stain removal. Act quickly and you are more likely to remove the stain. Always be gentle with your carpet as fibers can become damaged if you rub or scrub the carpet. Use a clean white towel or some paper towels to first soak up all of the liquid from the stain. Then, for many stains, a cold water rinse will remove the rest of the stain. After the stain is gone, carefully blot to remove excess moisture.

Many carpet cleaning commercials demonstrate their product by its ability to clean up red wine. This is because red wine is so noticeable, but also because it is something that often gets spilled on carpet. Cleaning this liquid is not as difficult as you might think. Blot up the wine as best you can, working from the outside in. Then rinse the spot with cold water, cold club soda or even chilled white wine, which has been shown to remove the red wine stain.

Another stain that happens more than you might think is the spilling of candle wax on carpeting. There are a few tricks to consider when this occurs. Fill a waterproof bag with ice and place it on top of the wax, which will help freeze the wax. Once the wax has frozen, gently scrape it off with a butter knife or dull knife. Hopefully, this will remove all of the wax, but if not, then you need to apply heat. Take a plain paper bag without ink or printing and place it over the wax. Take an iron on the warm setting (not hot) and rub it over the bag. Once the wax melts, it should stick to the paper bag and lift off of your carpet. If there is color left behind, treat this carefully with a spot treater or perhaps a mix of very mild dishwashing detergent and water.

Dog and cat urine is something that most pet owners have to deal with from time to time, especially with a puppy, kitten or an older animal. Begin by blotting up as much urine as possible, and then place a damp pad of paper towels or a clean damp cloth on top of the stain. Weight it down heavily and let it sit for approximately 10 minutes. Then blot up the liquid, and dilute the stain with water and spray on an enzymatic cleaner to rid the fibers of the urine smell. You can blot the liquid until the carpet is dry or even reapply the damp paper towels and weights overnight to truly allow the cleaner to work its magic. In the morning, the stain should be gone, as well as the smell.

Of course, with some stains, it is simply wise to call in an expert, such as a trusted Denham Springs carpet cleaning service, a Baton Rouge carpet cleaning service or a Prairieville carpet cleaning service. They can remove almost any stain on any type of carpeting or, at the very least, they can provide you with some helpful advice. Be sure to call them at least twice each year for professional carpet cleanings as these remove stains, dirt, dust, fungi and other toxins from your carpeting.
