Support For LGBT Monterey County

By Laura Wood

Coming out as an LGBT individual is not easy. LGBT Monterey County therapists can help guide their patients in this direction because one needs to eliminate the anxiety and know how they are going to go about it. In some cases, they will decide that it is best to leave this for some time until they get older or until they are in a better place in time. These are things one needs to take into consideration.

Beginning to tell people your decisions and choices regarding sexuality and gender can be a big step forward. It is never easy to know how to go about this. Some people feel that they are going to disappoint their loved ones. They are anxious about this, yet they don't want to run around feeling that they are being dishonest.

The worst thing that you can do is to force yourself to believe that you are attracted to someone of another gender when you don't feel that way. Of course, there are individuals who don't have these thoughts or feelings until much later on. During the initial years, one is drawn to people who are of the opposite sex.

There will obviously be challenges as you go through life. You will be exposed to people who can bully you, especially in school. However, as you enter the mature years of college and the workplace, you will find that this becomes less of a problem to have to deal with. There is a counselor on the college campus who you can talk to, should you find that things are getting tense.

This is known as asexual. They are happy within themselves. However, it is necessary to receive counseling before you allow this to simply be part of your life. There may be underlying issues that have not been resolved. This is something to deal with. In some cases, there are children who are as young as two and three who begin to explore with certain things which one would find out of the ordinary.

The whole family is involved and one gains a greater understanding of what is involved. Parents, especially will need this type of support. Initially, it is a good idea for them to talk to other parents who have been through the same thing. There are many support groups which can be more than helpful. Once can expect to face challenges, but this is par for the course. It is important to make the effort and embrace these changes.

Girls can be tomboys. It doesn't mean that they purposefully act like another gender. However, when a little girl refuses to wear dresses, and wants to copy everything her big brother does, one may have to look into this. Of course, one needs to decide as an individual later on whether you are going to continue with life as the sex you have been assigned or whether you are going to become more open to this.

These days, people know a lot more about LGBT. Parents are more accepting of the situation. They may only be upset because they know what the individual is up against. This will include bullying, discrimination, being up against hard times. Of course, one wants to protect their children. It is natural, but you have to set them free and this is the only way in which they can be happy.
