Fresh Fundraising Ideas Are Getting Harder To Come By

By Scott Bell

There is a myriad of organizations that firmly believe that they are making a difference in the world and that they deserve the support of the community. It often seems as if not a day goes by without someone appealing for donations and assistance. Many ordinary citizens can never help all those that ask for help and they tend to focus on one or two issues that appeal to them. Organizations appealing for help compete with each other and they can only succeed if they have interesting fundraising ideas.

So many charitable organizations appeal to all and sundry for support. Mass appeals will only work for a small number of organizations with a very wide support basis. In order to maximize efforts it is best to approach a very specific target market. To this end organizations need to analyse and define their most likely supporters and to focus their efforts on reaching them specifically.

It is time consuming to raise funds and in many cases it is not really worth the effort. Most charitable organizations are desperately short of help and cannot truly afford the time it requires to raise money and to focus on the aims of the organization. This is why it may be better to ask a professional fund raiser to do the job. They will charge a percentage of the money they raise, but it is often worth it.

Many organizations benefit greatly from an association with a benefactor. Well known individuals in the spotlight that support a specific cause can play a significant role in convincing their fans and admirers to also support that cause. Many companies have social responsibility programs and will adopt one or more causes to support on an on going basis.

Many worthwhile causes benefit greatly from grants. Lottery and casinos in many countries, for example, has to spend a certain percentage of their profits on supporting charitable organizations. Many government departments and corporations also specifically budget for grants to such organizations. Obtaining such a grant can be time consuming but is most certainly well worth the effort. Professional help with the application process may be needed.

Many organizations organize events to raise funds but in these modern times many find little support for their efforts. People do not support amateurish events any longer. They spend their hard earned money on events that they enjoy and that have been organized professionally. Charitable organizations can no longer depend upon the public to attend a jumble sale, for example, just to show support. They have to do much better than that.

Organizations appealing for financial assistance need to be accountable. There have been many examples of charities that abuse the funds that well meaning supporters gave them. This has caused potential donors to be more wary. It is vital to make sure that potential supporters know exactly how their money will be utilized and to then actually use that money as promised.

Society will not be able to function if there were not organizations passionate about helping those in distress, the poor, the sick, the needy and the aged. Others have the plight of neglected animals or vandalism of the environment as their causes. They all need support in order to survive.
