Different Types Of Grain Level Indicators

By Krystal Branch

Like other professionals, farmers need to use various facilities and equipment to make their work easier and to ensure that their farm produce is in good condition. There are various types of facilities used by farmers among them being elevators and silos that are used for storing farm produce. Silos for instance come in a variety of sizes and these structures are made of different materials. If you want to know the amount of grain storage space in your silo, it is essential to know the different grain level indicators and the purpose for which they are used for.

Rotary paddle bin indicators are designed with a paddle that rotates on the grains. If the store has some storage space left, the paddle would rotate profusely, which is different from what will happen if the store is full as it would just switch off. By determining the condition of the storage area, farmers can be able to take the appropriate measures.

The tilt switch mercury-free indicator operates on the use of a remote control. This indicator works to automatically alert farmers in case their silos are filled up. You need to control it as it moves through the storage area using the remote in order to ensure it can notify the farmer if the silo is filled up.

Tilt mercury sensors are connected to control systems or controlled by use of remote controls. The mercury contact state in this device would change when the silo is not filled up. In case the store is full, the mercury contact state would remain unchanged meaning it would retain its state and position.

You are also likely to come across mechanical level detector. This comes with a steel ball, which depresses an electrical button when it senses that the store is full. It also works by retaining the state and condition of the steel ball whenever it senses the availability of storage space in the silo. You can be able to get a wide range of mechanical sensors that you can be able to use.

Cable and weight indicators measure the cable distance as it moves through the store. The measured distance would be sent into control system through a digital communication connection control. The control system would thus evaluate to determine the amount of storage area left within the store.

You can also use the ultrasonic continuous level sensor to determine the free space in your silo. This device is made to measure the time taken by a sound flight that is generated by a sensor. It is designed to measure such distances without coming in contact with the silo components. Using this device can however lead to some wrong measurements especially when the internal dust in the silo absorbs some of the produced sound.

In order for farmers to determine and control the farm produce in their silos, they need to use grain level indicators. Manufacturers create various types of grain sensors which work differently with each being suitable for a particular situations. Before choosing any of these sensors, buyers are advised to know the advantages and drawbacks, they can derive by purchasing and using such sensors.
