Why Grain Level Indicators Are Essential

By Judy Sullivan

Grain level indicators are very useful in the seed processing and storage industry. They are used monitor if a silo or bin is empty, half full or completely full. This allows seed processors to know if they should continue adding produce to a bin or if they should stop doing so. These indicators can also monitor grain storage bins continuously and the readings they record at regular intervals can be used to manage inventory.

Grain storage bins are heavy and huge. If you do not have a gauge, the only way to know how much produce a bin has would be to climb on it and check the level manually. This is dangerous and not recommendable. Gauges help increase safety and can help you monitor a number of bins concurrently. This can save you money and time since very few people are needed to manage the produce storing operation.

Bin gauges are also easy to install. You only need to follow the directions of the manufacturer to install and start using them. These gauges also require minimal maintenance. Due to their timely and precise indications, the chances of operations being shut down are minimal. They also help ensure storage optimization because they accurately indicate if a bin is filled to capacity or not.

Different kinds of gauges are available and you should choose one that can meet the needs of your establishment. The tilt switch gauge is one type and it can work mechanically or work with mercury. In mechanical tilt switch gauges, steel balls activate the electric switches. Other tilt switch gauges use an accelerometer.

The tilt switch indicators that utilize mercury to work are more expensive than the mechanical tilt switch gauges and they feature a useful remote. The disadvantage of using them is that mercury can be hazardous. Tilt switch gauges that operate mechanically are cheaper but they should not be used in environments where explosions are likely to take place.

Tilt switch gauges that do not contain mercury are known as solidstate switches. They are well designed. The disadvantage of using solidstate switches is that they can only be operated through remote controlled units. You should consider these points about tilt switch gauges and decide on which one can serve you best.

The other kind of indicator available in the market is the rotary paddle gauge. This gauge has a motor, which rotates a paddle over stored produce. This indicator turns freely if a bin is not filled with grains. If a bin gets full, its motor switches off and the device warns users that the bin is full. Flour milling, seed processing, pet food processing and grain storage firms have a lot to gain from using these devices.

Grain level indicators work well on both smooth and ribbed bins. You can easily view them from more than 200 feet away and they glow in the dark. They are also reasonably priced and durable. With these devices, you can be able to run your establishment more efficiently. You will always know how much produce you have stored and your bins will never overflow with produce.
