The Easy Way To Use Green Cleaning In Home Improvement

By Jack Coleman

A common project for improving the home, which is normally taken for granted, is cleaning it from top to bottom. Cleaning might not take a long time nor cost a lot, but for some reason people think that it does. Cleaning can actually be rather inexpensive. When you use green cleaning techniques you improve the quality of your home and save money. Cleaning can be damaging to anything, because regular cleaners have chemicals that are not good. They can also put out harmful emissions that are dangerous for you to breathe in. You can improve things by using the following tips for green cleaning.

Make your wardrobe clutter free. When you pack the clothes into your closet you attract bugs and mites and other problematic creatures. Producing mold may also be a possibility as a result. Moths may begin to live in your clothes even if you have mothballs in the closet. You might want to give away some clothes that you know you will no longer wear. You can always use the remaining clothes that are worn and tattered for rags. Replace your mothballs with old socks that you have filled with cinnamon sticks, cloves and bay leaves. Your home will be more environmentally friendly. Clutter will also be reduced. And, as a fringe benefit, unwanted pests will probably stay away from your clothing.

Wardrobe cleaning may be necessary. Some people will have mites and other types of bugs in their clothing, especially if it is in a sealed area. Mold is also something you may run into. Storing the clothes can also be problematic as mothballs don't always keep out the moths. Go through your closet and donate what has been gently used. Then, you will be down to the clothing you will never wear, and is in poor condition - use these for rags in the future. You might want to put some bay leaves and cloves into old socks to keep the moths away. Your home will be more environmentally friendly. You'll reduce your clutter. The benefit of doing all of this is that your sweaters and clothing will be spared from infestation.

Replacing your existing paint with low or no VOC paint is a great environmental move for you and your family. VOC or Volatile Organic Compounds is the primary concern. Vapors will actually be released by this type of paint causing the indoor air to be unbreathable. Environmentally speaking, this type of indoor pollution inevitably ends up outside, causing the outdoor air to become worse and more toxic. Paint that is low in VOC reduces this possibility, something that most manufacturers take into consideration. It is possible that paint may come with other toxic chemicals that you should be aware of. Brand names such as Benjamin Moore and Dutch Boy make very trustworthy types of paint.

Do enjoy the outdoors, but hate all those bugs? Try enclosing a portion of your house and installing a screen. It can provide a wonderful place to enjoy family time or read a good book without being bothered by nature's pests. Installing a ceiling fan in this area will ensure that a cool breeze is always at hand.

Do not ever use furniture polish. Never use furniture polish as it is made with chemicals that may hurt you. These chemicals are bad for your health. They are bad for the air. You should also be concerned about the structural integrity of anything you clean with the substance. Instead, make your own green furniture polish by combining one part lemon juice to two parts olive oil. By simply rubbing the product into your furniture, you will be happy with what you see. This is a much better way to improve or maintain the overall health and structure of those that you love and the item you're trying to clean, respectively. The smell or odor of this mixture is much more pleasant than chemically-based furniture polish typically is. After reading this, you should have a few ideas on how you can remove toxic cleansers from your home and go green instead. Never forget that every home improvement project (no matter what your budget) starts with a thorough cleaning. Once you have made the choice to go green, understand that you are doing something very beneficial for both your family and your home. You know what to do - so go do it!
