Before You Take Your Relationship To Long Distance

By Frederik Amsel

So they are going backpacking around the world, studying abroad or travelling for work. Whatever reason is that's causing you to think about becoming a long distance couple, there are a few things you need to think about and understand before you take the jump.

There Will Be Some Disagreements

Much like in a regular relationship there will be some things that you don't both agree on. This can make things extremely difficult when you are hundreds of miles away from each other. After things have levelled out just tell yourself that it's completely natural to have quarrels once in a while, but you need to be thinking about ways that you can both get over the problems. You'll both need to meet in the middle and come to some sort of agreement. By working these issues out it will help you get over your next argument more quickly.

You'll Definitely Feel Lonely

It is sometimes a terrible feeling to be lonely, and new couples who spend a long time apart from each other are often left feeling more lonely than ever. The best option you have is to surround yourself with good friends, or find hobbies to occupy your time away from the other person. Don't sit at home thinking about your lover. Just because they aren't there, doesn't mean you have to be depressed and alone. Call up your friends and ask them to hang out for a while.

Jealously Could Ruin The Relationship

Before you get into a distance relationship, you should already have a great foundation of trust. I cannot say more about how critical this is for a distance couple. Everybody feels jealously, mainly when a previous lover lives close to your significant other. If you truly know your lover, there won't be a doubt in your mind about their commitment. We suggest reading various relationship building books together before you depart. Don't wait for the problems to come up before you decide to get help.

Maintaining The Relationship From A Distance Can Be Hard Work

It has been said many times that a long distance relationship is harder work than a local one. It takes great effort and perseverance for a distance relationship to work. You both need to be in it 100% from the beginning until the end of your time away. Plan on seeing each other on webcam at least once every two days. Organize online dates together. And make sure to chat about how your day went. This goes without saying, but never forget to take an interest in their life, their ambitions, and their future.
