Picking The Right Compost Spreader

By Mark Carter

If you are trying to enrich the soil, your best bet is to use natural fertilizer made from composting. Choosing the right compost spreader will help get the material in the right place regardless of the area you are treating. There are different sizes that can be used for everything from a single yard to a large field. It is important to pick the right tool for the job.

Industrial and consumer sizes exist. The larger fields where tractors are usually used will require the larger industrial sized spreaders to do the job right. In these cases, you will probably measure the material by the ton. Smaller but similar devices exist for efficient spreading for lawns and other smaller to medium sized jobs. It is important to pick the right equipment to do the job right.

In larger applications, a side spreader works well. These throw a lot of material over a large area as you drive down the field. The spray is not going to be as even or fine as some of the other spreaders will produce, but when you're going to mix it into the soil this equipment will get the fertilizer out there quickly and with a thick application.

Box spreaders with a vertical bar are great for maximizing the amount of spray. The box is pulled behind a tractor and the fertilizer is broken up and sprayed in a way that lays a nice layer on top of the soil. This thicker layer provides more nutrient value to the soil as it is mixed in.

When you want to have more control over the spread, choose a box with horizontal bars. These are hooked up behind the tractor in the same way the vertical bar box is. The difference is that this type is used to control the width of the spray. More accuracy in the width allows you to spray an even layer along a long track of the field when you have to work with long rows.

The spinner beaters allow you to work with multiple materials at once. Since compost comes from different sources, the density can be a problem. With each application, you have to adjust the equipment for the density. These allow you to mix multiple sources together and the beaters mix it for you so you can do one trip and not compact the soil with extra applications.

Smaller jobs such as lawns require similar equipment but can be scaled down to pull behind riding mowers. For a manual application, you can choose a mess roller style. These are front-loaded, meaning you can open the door and easily load or unload directly into the roller. The mesh breaks up the materials and provides an even spread across your lawn.

There is always a proper tool for each size and type of job. When you want to improve your lawn or fertilize your fields, choosing the best equipment will make the job easier and more cost effective. Using natural fertilizer is best for the environment but can be a problem because of the different density and wetness. Finding the the best equipment is designed to save you time and money.
