Ideas For Unique Fundraising Events

By Janet Brooks

Getting people to generously donate money to a cause is not the easiest task and it requires a particular kind of person to get people to willingly hand over money. Holding unique fundraising events to raise money is a good way to get ahead as the patrons are more likely to participate when they feel that they are benefiting in some way. Generous donations are bound to follow.

Setting up a golf tournament is a good way to elicit money from players. They find themselves in groups of four, either buying their own entry or doing it as a company donation. The charity will receive the entry fee. Small prizes are donated, with every play receiving something along the route, as well as several drinks! It's a good opportunity for local companies to donate branded merchandise such as caps and pens. At the end of the day, the winning team gets the grand prize, also donated.

Another idea is an auction. Getting donations of items such as art and sports memorabilia from willing supporters is the first part. Tickets to the event are usually sold off to groups or tables seating about ten patrons. For the price of the ticket, they will get a nice dinner. Throughout the dinner, various items will be auctioned off, with the objective being to raise the largest amount of money possible.

Invite local artists or street artists to participate in an exhibition where their work can be sold off. A roaming artist could do caricatures of attendees with the proceeds of those fun drawings going to the charity as well as the entry fee to the gallery.

Using various holidays as an excuse for a theme also works well. A fun idea would be to hold a pumpkin growing challenge with a prize for the largest pumpkin. Attendees and participants would buy their entries, prizes are always donated to keep expenditure as low as possible. Remember though, the pumpkins need to start growing in about April, so it's not a last minute event and takes a lot of planning. It could, however, become an annual event for an organization.

A charitable organization such as an animal shelter or children's home could host a quiz night, scavenger hunt or treasure quest on their premises. Each carefully and skillfully planned clue could be exchanged for a task that results in the property being repaired or updated. Walls can be painted, floors repaired and gardens tidied in sections by the participating players for them to progress on their pursuit.

The motivation for raising funds for a charity is to convince people and companies to hand over money so that another group, such as a children's charity or a community outreach program, can benefit and support its beneficiaries.

Just as the reasons for fund raising is unending, so are the ways it can be done. Getting people interested and keeping their attention and support is difficult unless the method used is unique. The aim is to inspire generosity for the selected cause.
