Engagement Ring components

By Ian Lenny

When buying an engagement ring there are many different things to consider as far as prices and styles go. For starters you need to decide on how many stones you want incorporated into the design. The most basic design is the solitaire diamond engagement ring. This is the classic type you see with one large gem in the middle. You can also opt for multiple stones with something like a halo ring. This type of ring features multiple stones all linning the main stone. In addition to the number of diamonds are the types of cuts you can buy.

Some of the most common cuts are the princess cut, square cut, cushion cut, and circle cut. The princess cut resembles a square which has a taper on the side. This gives the top edge a very dramatic look since the diamond immediately falls back and tapers down toward the bottom. The next cut, the square cut resembles the princess cut aside from the fact that it doesn't have a taper. This means that the primary edge does nat have as sharp a contrast as the princess cut, but nevertheless looks fairly dramatic. The next cut, the cushion cut, is a relatively complex cut. It stands out because it's a circular type shape with solid geometric cuts over the edges. This gives it a very unique multi angle taper along the sides. In order to have a good looking cushion cut it is important to begin with a comparatively large diamond so that the additional detail does not reduce the overall dimensions of the gem too much. The circle cut is a good option for an individual who would like a round cut, but cannot afford an engagement ring as large as someone getting a cushion cut. You will still get a unique circular appearance with out sacrificing quite as much of the stone.

Once you have choosen a cut now you may decide which kind of material you would like to use. While it may seem that this is as simple as selecting a diamond, you may still find various types of diamonds to select from. Most people don't know that you can opt for a pink, blue, yellow, or black diamond. This is of course in addition to the standard diamond. These diamonds are usually produced from an ordinary diamond and have the addition of one element to add a particular hue. They are especially unique becuase of the number of tint and color options that are offered. This allows diamond engagement ring buyers to really customize their ring and make a one of a kind purchase.

Once you have decided on all of the above features there is still the matter of the setting. For every setting you need to choose design and material. The most common setting is a silver color band made of silver, white gold, or platinum, with a four prong casing. This four prong casing provides minimum coverage of the gem. You can opt to have thinner or thicker prongs, and usually anywhere from four to eight. Another consideration is the prong material. For example Platinum is reltively strong and therefore can be made much thinner than a normal gold prong. So if you choose one of the harder materials you can use smaller stripss of metal to really show off the diamond. Some people however opt for softer materials such as 24kt gold as this gives the ring a classic look. Either choice you make you will not go wrong so long as the above mentioned features were carefully considered.

You now hopefully have a better understanding of a few of the main considerations you are likely to have to make when considering what type of options to get for your diamond ring. As you can see there's a great deal of options that most people are oblivious of until they are inside an engagement ring store ready to pull the trigger.
