Burning Soy Candles The Right Way

By Melissa Hall

As with any other candles, soy candles must be burned properly to get the most out of them, and for safety reasons. Here is a rundown on how to burn soy candles.

The wax for soy candles has what is normally called a "memory". "Memory" means that when you burn your soy candle and put it out, the next time you light it and burn it, the wax will melt across as far as it did on the first burn.

Because of this, it is best to allow a soy candle to melt all the way across to the edge of the jar on the first burn session. This prevents your candle from tunneling as it burns, leaving excess wax on the edge of the jar. You should burn soy candles one hour for every inch wide of the candle. So a 3 inch wide candle container would need to be allowed to burn for three hours or more to get a nice melt pool.

Speaking of melt pools....This is where the scent is in scented soy candles. A good melt pool will give off the best fragrance throw. 1/4in deep for the melt pool is what I aim for in my scented soy candles when the candle is burning.

Too shallow of a melt pool will keep the candle from releasing the best amount of fragrance into the room. Too deep of a melt pool means the wick is too big for the candle and the candle will burn too hot , which means the soy candles wax will burn up too fast and the wick would need to be trimmed much more often.

You should also keep your candle away from drafts to prevent smoking and soot. Soy candles create very little to no soot when correctly burned, but pretty much any candle will smoke and cause soot if there is too much of a draft.

Trimming your wick to 1/4 of an inch also prevents smoking and soot.

And most importantly, keep your soy candles away from anything flammable, and out of reach of children and pets.
