Important Aspects On Couples Counseling Chicago Residents Should Understand

By Jason Ellis

Virtually all relationships undergo challenges from time to time. The challenges range from simple to complex and a stable relationship should withstand most of them. In some cases, however, the differences are very huge and the partners struggle to find a solution. When the existing disagreements have a potential to break the relationship then you need to sign up for therapy. There are several important things on couples counseling Chicago residents need to understand.

Many couples are not comfortable with making the decision to seek the help of a therapist. Many of them consider therapy as a last resort when all the other alternatives have been exhausted. The general advice is that couples should not wait until things are far deteriorated because getting solutions by then is extremely difficult. Having therapy sessions regularly helps to sought out problems before they become unmanageable.

Once the decision to seek help has made, the next step is to identify the therapist. Recommendations can be obtained from friends, relatives and even from testimonials found on the internet. If there is no a therapist nearby, a number of health professionals may step in as they too have some training in this area. They include medical doctors, registered nurses, psychiatrists and psychologists.

The length of therapy varies depending on the severity of the problem. In general there are short term therapies and long term therapies. Short term therapies have a duration of between one and three sessions (focused therapy is a sub-type that lasts a lot shorter) while the long term therapies are anything between 12 and 24 sessions. The average time taken during a single session is 30 to 45 minutes.

One of the most important things that the partners have to do for this therapy to be effective is to recognize that different people subscribe to different beliefs. These are shaped by the environment in which they have been brought up. For this reason, it is not always possible to have them agree on all issues all the time; differences are bound to arise. During the therapy, the different value systems are brought to the table and partners learn how to deal with each other.

This therapy helps the partners to reflect on their relationship. Each of them examines the impact of their actions on the relationship. Many of the problems that couples have to handle take a period of time to develop. Understating how each of the problems came about is the first step towards solving them. The partners are taught how to effectively communicate with each other to formulate solutions.

The work of a therapist is to be a facilitator. They will not issue instructions on how a particular problem should be sorted out. The best that they can do is to offer their personal opinion and some guidance. The couple must remember that solutions will have to come from them. Partners should be able to freely discuss their affairs before the therapist without the fear of being judged.

There are numerous factors that may lead to a strained marital relationship. Lack of trust, affairs, financial issues, failure to meet responsibilities and family conflicts are just but a few examples. Couples or marriage counseling us designed to help partners appreciate that they have inherent differences in their value systems and are bound to differ in opinion from time to time.
