Understanding Radon And The Basic Radon Testing

By Joanna Walsh

As part of environmental and health protection, there are certain things that need to be done as required by the government. As a citizen, you are entitled to abide and cooperate. After all, it is for the safety of your family and yourself.

One of the environmental hazards that threaten the health of families is radon. It is a radioactive vapor that is formed naturally in soils, rocks, and bodies of water. This is a very dangerous lung cancer causing radiation. Hence, radon testing is very critical to protect people, especially in the US, from acquiring such a deadly disease.

Thousands of death has been accounted to relating to the disease which is brought about by the seemingly harmless gas. It is seemingly harmless because it cannot be seen and smelt. The detection cannot be done using the bare senses. There is a need for detection equipment. The dilemma will be doubled if a person smokes in a place where there are high levels of the gas.

In order to detect the presence of it, devices are needed. The EPA requires all citizens, including those in Des Moines, IA to do tests in their areas so that they are all free from the radiation caused by the breakdown of uranium. Everybody becomes a victim, children and adults alike.

Since it is very difficult to detect, a test should be done. These are done not only in houses but also in offices, schools, and other buildings. There are devices that can be used to test these places. There are long term and short term tests and there are also do it yourself that are even less costly. But there is a considerable difference between the findings of an expert and your own findings.

Some systems involved in detecting levels of the gas include reduction systems. Even of the gas detected is really high, there are remedies that will lessen the gas into a more acceptable level. New houses these days are now installed with resistant tools and equipment to prevent radon from entering or leaking into the house.

But still, these houses need to be tested even if they have built in resistants in a few years time. You do not have to worry about the cost because it is extremely affordable. And the fact that this will ensure your safety and protection, you do not have to worry that much.

Research and gather as much information. You need to understand the effects of radon as well as what causes it. You can actually see a lot of details in the web page of EPA. It is also detailed in the web page the passage of the gaseous compound. It actually goes into the cracks on floors and walls, water pipes, construction joints, water supplies, cavities in walls, and gaps in floors.

Three steps are recommended by EPA. Both the short term and long term tests are to be taken to make sure that the levels of radon are detected well. Then, if there is a need to fix the house and undergo a reduction process, it must be followed strictly.
