By Ida Dorsey

Before you get hired for an electrician position, you first need to pass series of exams that will measure how qualified you are for the task. These exams range from the technical aspects to the application process. Unless you manage to get the necessary licenses to get hired, you may find it difficult to land a job in major companies around the country.

Your academic performance in college can give you an idea of the level of your technical skills and competence. But for you to take a look at your personality test results, tests like PSI electrical exam is conducted. This is geared towards taking a closer looks at certain areas of your personality that will highly matter in the workplace.

One thing that it could include is about safety orientation. The job of an electrician is not easy. It is always accompanied by risk which is inherent to the nature of the task that deals with electricity and wiring. A candidate has to show that he is knowledgeable enough at least on the basics of safety and security.

Another one is your dedication. There are a lot of skilled workers nowadays who fall short of their employer satisfaction just because they cannot give even an extra time at work. Dedication fuels the energy to keep on going when one needs to.

Then, there is also this part that will measure your ability to work with others. While the job of an electrician requires the individual skill of the person, the way he deal with other people is also a must. The exam tries to find out how a candidate will react to certain situations that demand teamwork. The ability to work with other people is a sign that he is coachable and is willing to learn from other people.

Fourth is passion. Passion fuels hardwork. If you do not love what you are doing, you will lose interest in the long run. Also, when big challenges in the company comes, passion is the attribute that can help you see beyond the negatives.

There is also this part that measures your resilience to drugs and alcohol. Since electricians deal with such delicate details about electricity, it is a must that they stay away from alcohol and drugs. Those who have problems on this area will most likely reduce their chance of getting hired.

Sixth is the ability to deal with the pressures at work. The quality of work usually declines the bigger pressure one puts on another. If you do not have the proper mindset to prioritize and keep calm, then your work quality will definitely be affected. Worst case scenario, you will be fired. Companies do not want this and are looking for candidates who can tame their character well.

Start evaluating your personality and be honest on the areas which require more attention. Having good results with your PSI is a great tool in jump starting your career as an electrician. Practice self awareness.
