Keep Weeds, Algae Out Of Your Pond or Lake

By Roland Stockwell

If you have a pond or even a lake, this is a great enhancement for your property. However, these watery features can be overwhelmed by natural, but harmful algae or weeds. Here are just a few of the harmful items that you definitely want to avoid.

Algae can be bad or good, depending on what kind of algae exists in your pond. A light green-hued algae is generally not harmful, but when the water turns the color of pea soup, you really need to treat the water and reduce this algae. You often will find that algae really increases during the spring and summer months when the temperatures begin to spike. Not only can the algae affect fish and wildlife, some types of algae can make humans ill as well.

There are a variety of immersed and floating plants that can harm your pond water. An overgrowth of cattails, watermeal, azolla or duckweed can be harmful. There are also submersed plants, including bladderwort, that can harm your lake or pond.

When dealing with these issues, it is a good idea to bypass the chemicals and stick with safe and natural products. Chemicals of any kind can be dangerous for fish, wildlife and even plants that you do want around your pond. When you are dealing with a delicate ecosystem, keep it simple and natural when treating the water.

Using a product such as Healthy Ponds' AquaSpherePRO can be a great way to keep weeds and algae from growing in the first place. These are biodegradable spheres that contain special bacteria that eat away at algae to keep the water balanced.

Each sphere lasts for 30 days, and after the time has elapsed, just toss in new spheres. Best of all, these spheres are veterinarian approved and will not harm fish or other wildlife. Healthy Ponds also has a full line of products to fight weeds and other typical pond and lake issues.

While the spheres can stop problems before they start, if you do find that you have an overgrowth of algae or some kinds of detrimental weeds, there are also products out there that address those problems specifically. These products also use natural ingredients in lieu of harmful chemicals which is always a good idea.
